Ayscha in training for Hegewald 2009

Posted August 25th, 2009 No Comments yet

Ayscha is in full-on training for the Hegewald now, being shown the ropes by her mother, Kira.

Today we went over to our shoot on the Wirral again to practice hunting on the wild pheasants. The young chicks can now fly but we have to be careful. Not ideal but only 4 weeks left to prepare and Ayscha needs time on the birds to gain her experience since she was too young last shooting season.

In this video you can see that Ayscha has already learnt to back her mothers pointing and is now pointing well on her own quarry (though I do not yet let her flush her own points yet). She still needs to learn to hit the deck when the birds flush but she is pretty good for her age. Got very keen on one flush and tried to take out some tail feathers – madam – but she is really starting to mature.

Its a lot to expect from such a young bitch, but she is certainly up for it.

Her mother, Kira, is steady and mature as ever – finding the first pheasants in under 10 seconds from cast off. She must have produced a dozen birds today (but I only managed to video one field as I was firing the gun the rest of the time to teach Ayscha to drop on the shot).

We followed the hunting with two 300m pheasant drags using some thawed out frozen birds from last season . Ayscha was faultless and is really starting to impress but, as usual, just when you think you have seen the best, Kira comes along and does it even better.

Tomorrow we do some more blind retrieves over water – one of the most vital parts of the Hegewald training.
